Food is any substance that, when eaten, digested, and absorbed by the body, provides nourishment, energy, and materials needed for growth, repair, and maintenance of good health. The useful components of food that the body needs are called nutrients. A balanced diet is a diet that contains all the essential nutrients in the correct proportions needed by the body for proper growth, development, and maintenance of good health. Understanding food nutrients and how to plan a balanced diet is an essential life skill taught in Home Economics, helping individuals and families to stay healthy and avoid diet-related diseases.
Classes of Food Nutrients
There are six major classes of nutrients required by the body: carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils (lipids), vitamins, minerals, and water. Each class of nutrient performs specific functions in the body, and a healthy diet must include appropriate amounts of each.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. They are found in foods such as rice, yam, garri, maize, wheat, bread, potatoes, and sugar. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose during digestion, which is used by body cells to produce energy for daily activities such as walking, working, and even thinking. Excess carbohydrates that are not immediately used are stored in the body as fat, which is why moderation is important.
Proteins
Proteins are body-building nutrients essential for growth, repair of worn-out tissues, and the production of enzymes, hormones, and antibodies that fight disease. Proteins are classified into two types based on their source: animal proteins (first-class proteins), found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk, and poultry, which contain all the essential amino acids the body needs; and plant proteins (second-class proteins), found in foods such as beans, groundnuts, soybeans, and other legumes, which may lack one or more essential amino acids but are still valuable, especially when combined with other protein sources.
Fats and Oils (Lipids)
Fats and oils provide a concentrated source of energy, more than twice as much as carbohydrates or proteins per gram. They also help the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), provide insulation and cushioning for body organs, and add flavour to food. Sources include palm oil, groundnut oil, butter, margarine, fatty meat, and coconut. While fats are essential, excessive consumption can lead to obesity and heart disease, so they should be eaten in moderation.
Vitamins
Vitamins are organic substances needed by the body in small amounts to regulate body processes and maintain good health. Vitamin A (found in carrots, red palm oil, liver, and green leafy vegetables) supports good vision and healthy skin. Vitamin B-complex (found in whole grains, beans, and liver) supports energy metabolism and a healthy nervous system. Vitamin C (found in oranges, lemons, guava, and tomatoes) supports the immune system and helps wound healing. Vitamin D (obtained from sunlight and foods like fish and eggs) supports strong bones and teeth by aiding calcium absorption. Vitamin E (found in vegetable oils and nuts) acts as an antioxidant, protecting body cells. Vitamin K (found in green leafy vegetables) supports proper blood clotting.
Minerals
Minerals are inorganic substances needed by the body in small amounts for various functions. Calcium (found in milk, fish, and green vegetables) builds strong bones and teeth. Iron (found in liver, meat, and green leafy vegetables) is needed for the formation of haemoglobin in red blood cells, preventing anaemia. Iodine (found in seafood and iodised salt) supports normal function of the thyroid gland. Potassium and sodium (found in fruits, vegetables, and salt) help regulate fluid balance and nerve function in the body.
Water
Water is essential for almost every bodily process, including digestion, transportation of nutrients, regulation of body temperature, and removal of waste products through urine and sweat. Although water contains no calories, a person cannot survive for more than a few days without it, making it one of the most essential nutrients of all.
Functions of Food in the Body
Food generally performs three broad functions in the body, often summarised as the "3 Cs" or classified into three main functions: energy-giving foods (mainly carbohydrates and fats), which provide the fuel needed for physical activity and to maintain body temperature; body-building foods (mainly proteins), which support growth and the repair of damaged tissues; and protective/regulatory foods (mainly vitamins, minerals, and water), which help protect the body against disease and regulate body processes.
Meaning of a Balanced Diet
A balanced diet contains the correct proportion of all six classes of nutrients needed by the body, in amounts appropriate to a person's age, sex, activity level, and health status. A balanced meal typically includes a source of carbohydrate, a source of protein, some fats, and a good serving of fruits and vegetables to provide vitamins and minerals, along with adequate water.
Factors Affecting Nutritional Needs
The amount and type of nutrients a person needs can vary based on several factors: age (growing children and adolescents need more protein for growth); sex (men generally need more energy than women of similar age and activity level, while women of childbearing age need more iron); activity level (people who engage in strenuous physical activity need more energy-giving foods); health status (sick or recovering individuals may need specific nutrients to support healing); and pregnancy and breastfeeding (women in these conditions need extra protein, vitamins, and minerals to support the growing baby and milk production).
Consequences of Poor Diet
An unbalanced diet, whether from eating too little or too much of certain nutrients, can lead to malnutrition, which includes both undernutrition and overnutrition. Undernutrition can cause conditions such as kwashiorkor (protein deficiency, common in children, causing swollen belly and stunted growth) and marasmus (severe deficiency of both protein and energy, causing extreme thinness). Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can cause conditions such as night blindness (vitamin A deficiency), anaemia (iron deficiency), and rickets (vitamin D deficiency). Overnutrition, especially excessive intake of carbohydrates and fats, can lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
Planning a Balanced Meal
When planning meals, it is important to include a variety of foods from each nutrient group, choose fresh, locally available foods where possible, limit excessive salt, sugar, and fat, prepare food using healthy cooking methods that preserve nutrients (such as steaming rather than deep frying, and avoiding overcooking vegetables), and drink adequate water throughout the day.

In Nigeria and many other countries, traditional meals often naturally combine several nutrient groups; for example, a typical meal of rice and stew with fish and vegetables provides carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals together. When planning balanced meals, it is helpful to build on familiar local dishes and ingredients, such as beans, yam, vegetables, and locally available fruits, rather than relying only on imported or processed foods, since local foods are often fresher, more affordable, and well suited to traditional diets that have supported healthy communities for generations.
