Introduction to the Circulatory System

The circulatory system (also called the cardiovascular system) is the body system responsible for transporting blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products around the body. It is made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. Without a properly functioning circulatory system, cells in the body would not receive the oxygen and nutrients they need to survive, and waste products would build up and poison the body. In this topic, we will study the structure and function of the heart, the types of blood vessels, the composition of blood, and how blood circulates through the body.

The Heart

The heart is a muscular organ about the size of a closed fist, located slightly to the left of the centre of the chest, protected by the rib cage. Its main function is to pump blood around the body continuously, throughout a person's life. The heart is made of a special type of muscle called cardiac muscle, which can contract and relax rhythmically without getting tired.

Chambers of the Heart

The human heart has four chambers: two upper chambers called atria (singular: atrium) and two lower chambers called ventricles. The right atrium receives deoxygenated (oxygen-poor) blood from the body through large veins. The right ventricle pumps this deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. The left atrium receives oxygenated (oxygen-rich) blood from the lungs. The left ventricle pumps this oxygenated blood out to the rest of the body. The left ventricle has the thickest, most muscular wall because it must pump blood with enough force to reach every part of the body.

Valves of the Heart

The heart contains valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards, ensuring that blood moves in only one direction. The main valves include the tricuspid valve (between the right atrium and right ventricle), the bicuspid or mitral valve (between the left atrium and left ventricle), and the semilunar valves (at the exits of the ventricles, leading to the pulmonary artery and the aorta).

Blood Vessels

Blood travels through the body inside tube-like structures called blood vessels. There are three main types: Arteries are thick-walled, muscular vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body (except the pulmonary artery, which carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs). Veins are thinner-walled vessels that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart (except the pulmonary vein, which carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart); veins contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood. Capillaries are microscopic, extremely thin-walled vessels that connect arteries to veins; they allow the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products between blood and body tissues.

Composition of Blood

Blood is a red liquid connective tissue that makes up about 7-8% of body weight. It is composed of a liquid part called plasma and several types of blood cells. Plasma is a yellowish liquid that carries blood cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste products; it makes up about 55% of blood volume. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) contain a protein called haemoglobin, which binds to oxygen and gives blood its red colour; their main function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to body tissues, and carbon dioxide from tissues back to the lungs. White blood cells (leukocytes) defend the body against infections and diseases by destroying harmful microorganisms; they are part of the body's immune system. Platelets (thrombocytes) are small cell fragments that help blood to clot, sealing wounds and preventing excessive blood loss when the skin is cut or damaged.

Blood Groups

Human blood is classified into four main blood groups: A, B, AB, and O, based on the presence or absence of certain substances (antigens) on the surface of red blood cells. Each blood group can also be Rhesus positive (Rh+) or Rhesus negative (Rh-). Knowing a person's blood group is essential for safe blood transfusions, because mixing incompatible blood groups can cause dangerous reactions in the body.

Types of Circulation

Blood circulation in the human body occurs in two main circuits, forming what is called a double circulatory system. Pulmonary circulation carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, before returning oxygenated blood back to the heart. Systemic circulation carries oxygenated blood from the heart to all other parts of the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues, and then returns deoxygenated blood back to the heart.

The Path of Blood Through the Heart

Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium, passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, and is then pumped through the pulmonary artery to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood releases carbon dioxide and absorbs oxygen, becoming oxygenated. This oxygenated blood returns through the pulmonary vein into the left atrium, passes through the bicuspid (mitral) valve into the left ventricle, and is then pumped through the aorta to the rest of the body.

The Pulse and Heartbeat

Each time the heart contracts (beats), it pushes blood through the arteries, creating a wave of pressure that can be felt at certain points on the body, such as the wrist or neck; this is called the pulse. The normal resting heart rate for a healthy adult is about 60 to 100 beats per minute, though it is often slightly faster in children. Doctors and nurses check the pulse to assess a person's heart health.

Functions of the Circulatory System

The circulatory system performs several vital functions: it transports oxygen from the lungs to all body cells and carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs for removal; it delivers digested nutrients from the digestive system to cells throughout the body; it carries hormones from glands to target organs; it transports white blood cells and antibodies to fight infections; it helps regulate body temperature by distributing heat; and it removes waste products from cells and carries them to organs such as the kidneys for excretion.

Common Circulatory System Disorders

Several diseases can affect the circulatory system. Hypertension (high blood pressure) occurs when the force of blood against artery walls is consistently too high, which can damage the heart and blood vessels over time. Anaemia occurs when there are too few healthy red blood cells or too little haemoglobin, leading to tiredness and weakness because tissues do not receive enough oxygen. Heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked, usually by a clot, damaging heart tissue. Maintaining a healthy circulatory system requires regular exercise, a balanced diet low in excess fat and salt, avoiding smoking, and regular medical check-ups.

Keeping the Circulatory System Healthy

To keep the circulatory system healthy, one should eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; engage in regular physical exercise to strengthen the heart muscle; avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption; manage stress effectively; and attend regular medical check-ups to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
