Introduction
There are millions of different living things on Earth — from tiny bacteria too small to see, to giant whales in the ocean, to towering trees in the forest. Because there are so many kinds of organisms, scientists needed a system to organise and study them in an orderly way. This system is called classification. Meaning of Classification
Classification is the process of grouping living things into categories based on their shared characteristics and features. Organisms that are similar in structure, function, and origin are placed in the same group, while organisms that are very different are placed in separate groups. The scientific study of classification is called taxonomy, and scientists who specialise in this field are called taxonomists.
Why Do We Classify Living Things?

Basis of Classification
Scientists classify organisms using several observable characteristics, including body structure (whether an organism has a backbone or not), the way they obtain food (whether they make their own food or feed on other organisms), their mode of reproduction, their habitat (where they live), and their cellular structure (whether their cells have a nucleus or not).
The Five Kingdom System
One of the most widely taught classification systems groups all living things into five major kingdoms:
- Kingdom Monera: This kingdom contains simple, single-celled organisms without a true nucleus, called prokaryotes. Bacteria belong to this kingdom. They are found almost everywhere — in soil, water, air, and even inside our bodies.
- Kingdom Protista: This kingdom contains simple organisms, mostly single-celled, whose cells have a true nucleus. Examples include amoeba, paramecium, and algae. Some protists behave like plants, some like animals, and some like fungi.
- Kingdom Fungi: This kingdom includes organisms such as mushrooms, yeast, and moulds. Fungi cannot make their own food; instead, they absorb nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter, or sometimes from living hosts.
- Kingdom Plantae: This kingdom contains all plants, which are multicellular organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis using chlorophyll. Examples include mango trees, grasses, ferns, and mosses.
- Kingdom Animalia: This kingdom contains all animals, which are multicellular organisms that cannot make their own food and must feed on plants or other animals. Examples include humans, fish, birds, insects, and mammals.
Classification Within the Animal Kingdom
The animal kingdom itself is further divided into smaller groups based on the presence or absence of a backbone.
- Vertebrates: Animals that possess a backbone (vertebral column). They are further grouped into fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
- Invertebrates: Animals that do not possess a backbone. This group includes insects, worms, spiders, snails, and jellyfish, and makes up the majority of animal species on Earth.
Classification Within the Plant Kingdom
Plants are also grouped into smaller categories, mainly based on whether they produce flowers and seeds, or reproduce using spores.
- Flowering plants: Plants that reproduce through flowers and produce seeds enclosed in fruits, such as mango, orange, and beans.
- Non-flowering plants: Plants that do not produce flowers, such as ferns and mosses, which usually reproduce using spores.
The Hierarchy of Classification
Beyond the kingdom level, organisms are further sorted into smaller and more specific groups in a hierarchy: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. As we move down this hierarchy, organisms in the same group become more and more similar to one another, with Species being the smallest and most specific unit, referring to organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

In this system, every organism is given a two-part scientific name written in Latin: the first part is the Genus name (written with a capital letter), and the second part is the species name (written in lowercase), with both names usually italicised or underlined. For example, human beings are scientifically named Homo sapiens. This system ensures that scientists anywhere in the world can identify exactly which organism is being discussed, regardless of the local language being spoken.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Students often confuse the terms "classification" and "identification." Classification is the broad process of grouping organisms into categories, while identification is the process of determining which existing group a particular unknown organism belongs to. Another common mistake is assuming that all small organisms belong to Kingdom Monera; in fact, many small organisms, such as amoeba, actually belong to Kingdom Protista because their cells have a true nucleus, unlike bacteria.
