Crop Production: Preparing the Land and Planting Crops

Introduction

Crop production is one of the most important activities in Agricultural Science because it provides the food we eat and many of the raw materials used by industries. Before a farmer can grow healthy crops, the land must be properly prepared and the crops must be planted using the correct method. This lesson introduces you to the basic steps involved in land preparation and planting, which form the foundation of successful crop farming.

Meaning of Land Preparation

Land preparation refers to all the activities a farmer carries out on the soil before planting, in order to create the best possible conditions for seeds or seedlings to grow well. Proper land preparation loosens the soil, removes unwanted plants, improves aeration and drainage, and helps the roots of young plants to penetrate the soil easily.

Steps Involved in Land Preparation

  • Clearing: This is the first step, where bushes, shrubs, tall grasses and unwanted trees are removed from the farmland using tools such as cutlasses, axes or bulldozers, or through controlled bush burning.
  • Packing/Removal of debris: After clearing, the cut vegetation is gathered and packed away or burnt so that it does not obstruct further farm operations.
  • Ploughing: This involves breaking and turning over the top layer of soil using tools like hoes, ploughs, or tractors. Ploughing loosens compact soil, buries weeds, and improves aeration and water infiltration.
  • Harrowing: After ploughing, harrowing breaks the large soil clods into smaller, finer particles, producing a smooth seedbed that is suitable for planting.
  • Ridging or bed making: Depending on the crop, the farmer may make ridges (long raised rows of soil) or beds. Ridges are useful for crops like yam and cassava because they improve drainage and make harvesting easier.
  • Leveling: For crops like rice that are grown in lowland areas, the field may need to be leveled to ensure water spreads evenly.

Tools Used in Land Preparation

Farmers use different tools depending on the scale of farming. Small-scale farmers commonly use hand tools such as the hoe, cutlass, rake, and spade, while large-scale farmers use mechanized tools such as tractors fitted with ploughs, harrows and ridgers. Mechanized tools prepare land faster and are suitable for large farms, while hand tools are more affordable and suitable for small farms.

Why Land Preparation Is Important

Good land preparation is important for several reasons. It loosens the soil so that roots can grow deep and spread easily. It buries weeds and crop residue, which decompose to add nutrients to the soil. It improves aeration, allowing air to reach plant roots and soil organisms. It also improves drainage, preventing waterlogging which can kill young plants, and it creates a fine seedbed that allows seeds to germinate evenly.

Meaning of Planting

Planting is the process of placing seeds, seedlings, or other planting materials such as cuttings and setts into the prepared soil so that they can grow into mature plants. Planting must be done correctly, at the right time, depth and spacing, to give the crop the best chance of survival and good yield.

Methods of Planting

  • Direct seeding (broadcasting): Seeds are scattered evenly over the prepared land by hand or machine. This method is quick but often results in uneven plant spacing. It is commonly used for crops like rice and some cereals.
  • Drilling: Seeds are placed in shallow furrows or rows at a regular spacing and depth, then covered with soil. This method gives more even plant distribution than broadcasting.
  • Dibbling: Holes are made in the soil at specific spacing using a dibber or hoe, and one or more seeds are dropped into each hole before covering with soil. This method is common for crops like maize and beans.
  • Transplanting: Seedlings are first raised in a nursery before being carefully uprooted and replanted in the main field. This method is used for crops such as tomatoes, pepper, and rice in some farming systems.
  • Vegetative planting: Some crops are not planted from seeds but from vegetative parts such as stem cuttings, setts, or suckers. Examples include cassava (stem cuttings), yam (setts), and sugarcane (stem cuttings).

Factors to Consider Before Planting

Before planting, a farmer must consider several important factors. The time of planting should match the beginning of the rainy season for rain-fed crops, so that seeds receive enough moisture to germinate. The spacing between plants should be appropriate for the crop type, since overcrowding leads to competition for nutrients, water and sunlight, while too much spacing wastes farmland. The depth of planting matters because seeds planted too deep may fail to germinate, while seeds planted too shallow may dry out or be eaten by birds. The quality of planting material is also important; farmers should use healthy, disease-free seeds or seedlings to ensure a good crop stand.

Planting Depth and Spacing for Common Crops

Different crops require different spacing and depth. For example, maize is usually planted at a depth of about 3 to 5 centimetres with a spacing of about 75 centimetres between rows and 25 centimetres between plants. Cassava cuttings are usually planted at an angle, partly buried in ridges, spaced about 1 metre apart. Yam setts are planted on mounds or ridges with wider spacing because yam plants need more room to grow. Following the recommended spacing and depth for each crop helps to achieve maximum yield.

Practical Activity

Visit a nearby farm or your school garden, if available, and observe how the land has been prepared. Identify whether ridges, beds, or flat land was used, and try to identify the planting method used for the crops growing there. Discuss with your classmates why that particular method might have been chosen for that crop.

Common Mistakes Farmers Should Avoid

Many new farmers make avoidable mistakes during land preparation and planting. Planting before the land has been properly cleared and ploughed often leads to poor root development and competition from weeds. Ignoring the correct spacing for a crop can cause overcrowding, reduce sunlight penetration, and encourage the spread of pests and diseases between plants that are too close together. Farmers should also avoid planting immediately after heavy rainfall when the soil is too wet, since waterlogged soil can rot seeds before they germinate.

Land Preparation and Planting in Different Farming Systems

In traditional Nigerian farming systems, most land preparation is still done using hand tools like the hoe and cutlass, especially in rural communities where mechanized equipment is not easily available. In more modern, mechanized farms, tractors with ploughs and harrows can prepare large areas of land within a few hours, which would take many labourers several days to complete by hand. Regardless of the method used, the underlying goal remains the same: to create a loose, well-aerated, weed-free seedbed that gives crops the best possible start.
